About Our School

Welcome our Impact Martial Arts Academy website, and we appreciate the opportunity to serve you and your family. Our martial arts instructors and program directors are standing by to assist you on enrolling into a program that is the perfect fit! Impact Martial Arts Academy is located on the far east side of Indianapolis near Washington Square Mall. With a 6,000 ft facility there is plenty of training space for each class. Impact Martial Arts Academy offers: pre-school karate classes, elementary-aged karate programs, family martial art classes, and adult-only classes. Impact Martial Arts Academy founder Master Russ Northup opened the first Impact Academy of Martial Arts in Indianapolis in 1981 after serving in the military. As an 8th Degree Black Belt Master Northup operates the east side location and trains other instructors throughout the United States. Working hard to change lives and bring the martial arts awareness with members within our community, his team has become a city wide “Partners In Education” with the public school system. Thank you for visiting the IMAA website, and we hope to see you soon!"

Instructor/Owner Russ Northup

He has been honored several times at the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and has coached the United States team all over the world. He is due to receive his 9th degree black belt in November of 2022. Master Northup opened his first school on the east side of Indianapolis in 1981 after leaving the army, and then sold his school to one of his students and moved to take over a school in Memphis TN in 1984. He returned to Indianapolis to be closer to family and taught at the boys and girls clubs in 1992, and then reopened his east side location in February of 1998. Master Northup has done many programs for the local school systems teaching goal setting and anti-bully programs during the gym classes. This has been a great place for my 5 year old. He absolutely loves going. It’s a great energy burner and the martial arts philosophy instills great lessons for young children. We have seen an improvement in his ability to listen and follow instructions. He is so motivated to get his black stripe!!!
